When your having the tank cleaned it should be cleaned from the center cover if possible. There are septic tanks that do not have center covers but they'll have a large inlet and outlet cover. Through the center cover we can see from one end of the tank to the other and make sure ALL OF THE SOLIDS are taken out. From this cover we can see the condition of the tank and to see if the outlet baffle is still intact. With concrete septic tanks 20 years and older there is a possibility of the outlet baffle disintegrating and falling down to the bottom of the tank, this will allow solids to exit directly into the leach field, causing premature failure of the septic system.

When cleaning from the center cover we pump out all of the liquid we can then reverse our pump to pressure. Doing this we pump the liquid back into the tank (back flush) like a fire hose and break up all of the solid then we draw it back out of the tank. Sometimes we might have to do this 2 or more times depending on the amount of solids. When the job is finished there should be about a 1/2 inch of liquid left in the tank for two reasons, one is the tank is flat and we can't get all of it out, and second the tank should have some starter food / bacteria left in the tank to keep it healthy. Septic tanks should be cleaned every 3 - 5 years on average, depending on how many people use the system. Septic tank additives ARE NOT NEEDED acording to the EPA.
